Model 548 has certain features of great interest in the history of light design: the directionable projector that directs the light towards a reflecting screen, the supporting bar, the balance between different weights. But it is the large head that makes it stand out: use of opaline methacrylate gives a sophisticated light diffusion effect.

Flos Mod. 548 Lamp by Gino Sarfatti from Stardust. The incredibly elegant modernist "Modello 548" Table Lamp was designed by Italian lighting prodigy Gino Sarfatti in 1951 for Arteluce. One of the most iconic pieces of Italian design is Sarfatti's Modello 548, a classic table lamp with reflected and diffused light, and a characteristic colored cup-shaped diffuser. The main innovation in this newly edited lamp is that the old push button switch has been turned into an optical dimming sensor. This newly edited 548 table lamp presents a handsome marriage of contemporary, energy-saving light sources with retro form. Gino Sarfatti's Modello 548 lamp is outfitted with technologically advanced LED lights which provide a total of 730 lumens of light comparable to a 60W incandescent light bulb. The color rendering index is 2700 K: which is a warm white light. The shape and functional details remain identical to the original 1951 design.

Gino Sarfatti is possibly the most important lighting designer in the history of Italian design. Between founding the beloved Arteluce in 1939 and selling it to Flos in 1973, the self-taught designer had over 600 lamps and "light fittings" under his name. This year would have been Sarfatti's 100th birthday, and to mark this occasion Flos joined up with curators Marco Romanelli and Sandra Severi Sarfatti to republish some of his most iconic mid-century modern Italian design lamps.
